Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction All Day Retreat

Instructors Kurt Hoelting

MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and is used throughout the country in the treatment of chronic pain, physical illness, depression, anxiety and PTSD. Samaritan Center hosts the eight-week series year around. The classes are led by trained and experienced MBSR instructors affiliated with Cascadia Mindfulness Institute. Classes are open to Samaritan clients and others in the community.

“Mindfulness,” MBSR instructor Kurt Hoelting explains, “is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life. It is a way of doing something for yourself that no one else can do for you — consciously and systematically working with your particular stress, pain or illness as well as with the challenges and demands of your everyday life.”

Participants meet with an experienced MBSR instructor for eight weeks to learn a variety of practices that reduce stress. These include mindfulness meditation, body scanning, simple yoga and Qi Gong. The instructor also facilitates group dialogue and the processing of participants’ experience in the class in order to explore what is being learned and how it is being integrated.
