An Open Letter from Larry Carlson

Celebrating Service
I am deeply honored to serve as Board President during the 65th anniversary year of Samaritan Center of Puget Sound, which was formerly known as Presbyterian Counseling Service. As I reflect on my journey, I realize how interconnected my life has been with this agency. My first exposure to its founder was at Whitworth College in the early 1960s, where his message inspired me, igniting my passion for becoming a therapist. Over the years, my connections grew stronger: Two of my seminary classmates worked with Neil Kuyper in the early 1970s, and I also met Bev Shrumm in 1970 while she was part of the summer deputation team for University Presbyterian Church. Our paths crossed again in the mid-1980s at Divorce Lifeline, a program initiated by Presbyterian Counseling Service. I volunteered to lead a group, and Bev began her administrative journey as director of Divorce Lifeline during that period. More recently, Bev invited me to consult at Samaritan for those interested in child therapy, a role I fulfilled until my professional retirement three years ago.
Professional Journey
My career as a therapist began in 1977 after completing my Clinical Social Work training. I started out in a nonprofit community mental health setting, then held brief positions in medical and government organizations, and concluded my career in private practice. My clinical work focused on adult and child psychotherapy as well as crisis intervention. Serving people in this meaningful way has brought me immense fulfillment, for which I am truly grateful.
Family Blessings
I am also blessed with a wonderful family. My wife of 47 years, Claudia, is a retired Clinical Social Worker. Our two sons and their partners lead fulfilling lives, and we are fortunate to have a wonderful granddaughter who lives in Taiwan with her parents.
Looking Ahead: Strategic Vision
This year, the Board is launching a new strategic plan with a special emphasis on fundraising and Board recruitment. Our commitment is to secure a strong financial foundation for Samaritan Center, ensuring another 65 years of fulfilling our mission; providing mental health services with compassion and sensitivity to spiritual needs.
