Psychological Assessment for Children and Adolescents

Matthew S. Percy. Psy.D.

Psychological testing is a standardized, scientifically validated, reliable method for measuring psychological traits, determining diagnoses, predicting behaviors, and guiding treatment plans, educational programs, and other interventions.

Purposes

  • To clarify and provide differential diagnoses (ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, PTSD, Learning Disabilities, etc.)
  • To provide information about intellectual, cognitive, emotional, personality, and behavioral functioning
  • To identify neuropsychological problems
  • To inform decisions regarding treatment by providing intervention recommendations
  • To assist in educational placement and planning

Testing can be one of the most efficient ways for parents and teachers to gain an understanding of a child, and for individuals to gain clarity about their psychological functioning.

Each assessment battery is catered to the client’s individual situation. A typical case includes: a clinical interview; intelligence tests; performance tests; projective tests; personality tests; and behavioral evaluations. At Samaritan Center we provide a comprehensive psychological report utilizing the interpretation of the assessment results in order to offer diagnostic clarity and treatment recommendations. Finally, the testing results and comprehensive report are presented and discussed in a follow-up feedback session.

Insurance will typically provide some coverage when “medical necessity” is established. This means that insurance may pay for testing when it iwill aid in diagnosis and/or the delivery of treatment for a diagnosable condition.
